The Beacon Media Group owns and publishes the Whakatane Beacon, the Eastern Bay Life, the Opotiki News and the Waitomo News. All publications are printed on the company’s premises in Pohutu Street, Whakatane by Beacon Print Whakatane.
The majority of shares in the group are owned by the Spring family, with 20% owned by NZME. The Beacon Media Group also includes Mann Print and Design Whakatane and Calnar Business Systems Tauranga.
The Beacon has been delivering news to the Eastern Bay since 1939 and is the leading source of community news in the region. The Beacon is published three days a week, on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday.
The first issue of the Bay of Plenty Beacon was printed on Friday, April 21, 1939. Founded by Leicester Spring, the tri-weekly newspaper was given its name by the first editor, Clive Kingsley-Smith, who wrote: ‘A Beacon’s beam penetrates the darkness, revealing the furthermost corners and shedding light on every movement and activity that takes place within its arc.’
Eastern Bay Life
The Eastern Bay Life is our free tabloid community newspaper, and is a total market coverage product with a circulation of 18,309. It is printed on Thursday evening and delivered by delivery runners, rural contract drivers and PMP to letterboxes throughout the Eastern Bay by midnight on Friday night.
The circulation area is the same as the Whakatane Beacon. The Eastern Bay Life is delivered to all letterboxes in urban areas, and to letterboxes of rural householders who have their mail delivered by rural delivery. It is not delivered to post office box addresses. Postal subscriptions are not available.
The Opotiki News is published Tuesday and Thursday mornings, our team endeavour to give you all the local news to keep you up-to-date with what’s happening in the town and surrounding areas.
The Waitomo News is delivered free to more than 7500 households and businesses on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is the only newspaper many households in the Otorohanga and Waitomo districts receive.
