THE Opotiki District Council warns that flushing wipes down the toilet could have far-reaching consequences.

Chief executive Aileen Lawrie said council contractors had to respond to blocked wastewater pipes caused by wet wipes being flushed down the toilets.

“This puts our contractors and community at risk,” she said.

“If we had a storm and the pump was to go while under high load there could be loss of service for a long time and severe overflows.”

By doing the right thing, putting wipes in the bin – and not down the toilet – residents will help the wastewater flowing through the pipes and keep the contractors safe during the lockdown period.

“Help them to help you by sticking to the three Ps that go down the loo: pee, poo and toilet paper.”
