A WHAKATANE Swimming Club relay team took out second place in a relay event at the Mount Maunganui Hot Stuff swimming competition last weekend.

The team of Caign Boonen, 11, Nikkolas Brown, 11, Savannah Macey, 9, and Nikau Seymour, 10 placed second in the mixed 11-and-under 100-metre freestyle relay. They were up against nine other teams.

Competing in the open age group category, the team of Zoey Salt, 14, Kithmini Melville, 12, Brooke Leeder, 15, and Alex Wilton, 12, finished in a comfortable eighth position in the mixed 12 and over 200m freestyle relay.

In the individual events, some of the younger swimmers took on some big races.

Up against a field of mostly older swimmers, Caign finished 11th in the 400m individual medley and 13th in the 400m freestyle. Alex and Nikkolas also had top-20 finishes in the 400m freestyle.

The club took 12 swimmers aged eight to 15 to the competition.

The swimmers are coached by Mason Pickering. The club will be hosting the Whakatane Triple Threat Meet on Sunday, November 17.
