AFTER nearly three decades at the helm of the Ohope Top 10 holiday park, Janene Maguire is moving on.

Mrs Maguire has sold the holiday park and associated Surf and Sand beachfront venue business to Arnold and Chile Kremer from Canterbury.

Land for the Top 10 section of the holiday park complex is leased from Ngati Awa, and Mrs Maguire’s company, Kapulina Holdings, owned the land at the Surf and Sand complex.

Coincidentally, Mrs Maguire and the previous owner before her were also originally from Canterbury.

The Kremers first visited the park in 2010 and, when it came up for sale, they jumped at the chance to own it.

Mr Kremer said they had previously owned a park in Blenheim but were between businesses, so the timing of the sale was perfect.

“We just really liked the location here and enjoyed our original stay on holiday,” he said.

“So, when we saw it was for sale, we had to have it.”

Unlike their park in Blenheim, which flooded the day they took over ownership, their first days in Ohope have been fantastic and full of sunshine – something the couple hope is a good omen.

Mr Kremer said they would not be making any changes for their first year but following that, would review the park’s performance and make changes as needed.

Park manager Mark Inman will stay in place and the Kremers plan to split their time between Ohope and Christchurch, where their family lives.

Mrs Maguire said she decided three years ago that it was time to move on from the park.

“I felt like it was time for a new challenge,” she said.

“There were one or two things I wanted to put in place first and once those were done the timing was right. It was just a gut feeling.”

She said there had been some memorable times for her at the park, including several cyclones, last year’s tornado and a camper accidentally setting fire to both their own accommodation and others’.

However, most memorable have been the people she has met over the years.

“When I first came here, I was stuck at the park with young children, so I didn’t get out much and only made friends with people coming through the park.

“So, all the people I have met have been the most memorable moment for me. You make some really good friends and I’m sure that’s true of Chile and Arnold, too.”
