OHOPE Beach School pupils got to try a sport last Friday that most children their age probably don’t expect to for many years – bowls.

Fifty year 3 and 4 students took part in a bowls have-a-go day run by members of Ohope Bowling Club.

Teacher Karen English, who attended with the children, says they had a great time. “It is an event we have had going for about seven years. We didn’t do it last year but have picked it up again this year and the children love it.’’

Event organiser Gary Spraggon says it was a strong turnout from the school. “We enjoy having them come here and learn the basics about bowls, we just play some bowls-based games and keep it simple.

“We try to make it as fun as possible for them. We have to do it with help from volunteers, but they do a great job. Some of the pupils from the past have taken up the game more competitively so that is always a positive for us. We do see some people come back.’’

Two more sessions will be held over the coming weeks with other children from the school.
