TEAMS from three Eastern Bay schools have qualified for the national chess finals.
Whakatane and Trident high schools and Edgecumbe College all did well enough in the Whakatane regional competition to gain a place in the national finals at Villa Maria College in Christchurch on October 18.
Two qualification events are held each year, one in term two and one in term three. In the August 27 event, Edgecumbe College chess team brought home silver medals which qualified them for the national competition.
Team member Devyne Keefe, 15, says the team was surprised to come second in the competition as they were up against some tough schools.
“We practice for an hour every week at school and a lot of us practice at home too,” says Devyne.
“We enjoyed meeting the students from all the other schools and were really surprised but proud to come second.”
