STEALING money from a budgeting service has resulted in a court appearance for an Opotiki resident.

Volunteer Network Opotiki budgeting adviser Roslyn Jerram said a regular client of hers had, last Friday, made off with more than $400 in an opportunistic theft.

“They wanted extra money, but we said no,” she said.

“They then saw money lying on the desk in a coin bag – and they took it.”

Opotiki police Sergeant Mike Mackenzie said two people were arrested following the event.

One of those persons arrested has subsequently been charged with theft.

He will appear in the Opotiki District Court.
