SOMETIMES being called “mums,” the chrysanthemum flowers are always in full sway during Mother’s Day, Opotiki Museum manager Dot Wilson said.

And she should know, having cultivated chrysanthemums since she was 25 years old, some 55 years ago.

A member of both the Waikato and the New Zealand Chrysanthemum Society, Mrs Wilson said she’s “just growing them as a hobby”.

“I have 600 plants in my paddock,” she said.

“I’m not growing them to sell them, but I used to give them to the florists in Opotiki when we had them.”
