WITH the official deadline for the clearing of debris from the site of the old Opotiki Drill Hall gone, Opotiki District Council is exploring options moving forward.

The owners of the site were supposed to have cleared it by May 6, but it remains littered with debris.

Planning and regulatory group manager Gerard McCormack said the council might consider granting an extension following a meeting this week.

“Some progress has been made in clearing the debris from the drill hall site – people might have seen the truck and machinery on site taking away metal from the pile,” he said.

“We will meet with the owners and talk through the next steps to make sure we are seeing genuine efforts to clear the site and plans for more work to be done.

“While they haven’t complied, the owners appear to be heading in the right direction.

“Following an honest conversation this week, if we believe that work will continue, we are likely to extend the time period.”
