OPOTIKI’S volunteer fire brigade was called out yesterday to prevent the spread of a small fire, fuelled by dry nettles and trees.
The fire, behind the skatepark, was not an accident according to deputy principal rural fire officer Paul Hunter.
“It’s definitely deliberate,” he said.
Mr Hunter said it was possibly a case of a bored youth, armed with a lighter or matches, setting the blaze.
In spite of being lit on a bed of dry nettles and near multiple trees, wind direction prevented the fire from spreading more than a few metres.
The fire brigade quickly dealt with the remainder of the fire, stomping out and dousing the smouldering remains.
